CECAFA U23: Ethiopia, Eritrea open tournament with thrilling 3-all draw

The CECAFA U23 Challenge Cup officially kicked off with the Hebesha Derby that witnessed hosts Ethiopia and neighbors Eritrea play to a 3-3 draw in Bahir Dar.

Eritrea came from behind on three occasions through their starman Suleiman Ali Ibrahim who scored a hat trick.

Ethiopia took an early lead in the 12th minute through William Solomon Tesfae but Suleiman Ali equalized for Eritrea with a low shot in the 38th minute.

Ethiopian skipper Abubaker Nasser Ahmed restored the lead through a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.

Two minutes later, Suleiman Ali levelled the matters again with a chip over goalkeeper Tsiyon Merid Jimma and ensured a 2-2 tie at the mandatory halftime break.

Abubaker Nasser made it 3-2 for Ethiopia 11 minutes into the second half before Suleiman Ali completed his hat trick with an equalizer from the penalty mark.

Both teams will have to face Burundi, their other Group B opponents with hopes of sealing a place in the semi finals.

The CECAFA U23 Challenge Cup will continue with action from Group A as Uganda Kobs take on DR Congo.
