Burundi will play against Kenya’s Emerging Stars in the semi finals of the ongoing CECAFA U23 Challenge Cup in Ethiopia.
To seal the semi final berth, Burundi came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with the hosts Ethiopia in the final Group B game played on Friday afternoon.
Beshal Gugsa Chernet scored at the stroke of halftime to give the Ethiopians the lead but defender Issa Hakizimana levelled matters in the 65th minute with a header from a corner kick.
Burundi, who came into the game needing a draw to qualify as group leaders, held on to secure the needed result.
” It has been a very tough game and Ethiopia kept us under a lot of pressure. But I am glad we managed to get the draw and progress to the semi finals,” said Burundi’s coach Jimmy Ndayizeye.
Ndayizeye’s men now shift focus to Kenya who emerged as the winners of Group C with six points.
Burundi finished as group leaders with four points having beaten Eritrea 3-0 in their first game.
Ethiopia finished second with two points having drawn 3-3 against their neighbors Eritrea in the opening game of the tournament.
Ethiopia will have to wait for the results in the other groups to progress if they come out as second best.
