Ugandan shot stopper and captain Denis Onyango made a return in Sundowns goal as they cruised past Wydad Casablanca 2-1 at Lucas Moripe Stadium to register their first group A win of the CAF Champions league.
Onyango who was named the best goalkeeper on the continent missed his side’s 2-1 defeat to Lobi Stars of Nigeria last weekend.
The home side got off to a perfect start as Themba Zwane calmly slotted them into a deserved lead in the 7th minute.
Sundowns had numerous opportunities to extended their lead but Lebohang Maboe and Zwane were unable to capitalise.
Sundowns were made to the those missed chances as the visitors restored parity ten minutes to halftime breather courtesy of a Mohamed Nahiri long range shot to beat Onyango.
After the recess, Pitso Mosimane’s charges continued to press for the second but their finishing was wanting.
In the 64th minute, the hosts were not to be denied as Zwane completed his brace with a sensational volley from the edge of the box.
The visitors also surged for the equaliser but Sundowns remained resilient and in the end, they managed to claim their first points to move to second in group A.
