Buddo edge Kitende on penalties to clinch Wakiso championship

Buddo SS edged arch rivals St. Mary’s Kitende 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in a contest played at Wakissha Resource center to claim Wakiso District Championship for the first time in history.

This was a repeat of last year’s final when Kitende won 1-0 to be crowned champions of the district. Richard Basangwa headed Kitende into an early lead off a well delivered corner kick from youngster Steven Sserwadda.

Buddo leveled matters through the Joseph Bukenya Kizza with only a few minutes to the halftime breather.

The second period saw Buddo remain with 10 men after Kafumbe Joseph received matching orders for a dangerous tackle on Sula Mpanga. With the clock ticking down, Buddo tactician Simon Mugerwa introduced on goalkeeper Anthony Situma who was the hero of the day for Alistote Muhindo.

In the spot kicks, Buddo converted all five while Mpanga had Situma save his penalty. At the end Buddo became champions in the District football championship for the first in 27 years.

Mugerwa the Buddo tactician expressed optimism that his team will manage to defend the National Championship as well as the East Africa schools competition this year

“I am delighted that we have managed to win out first trophy on the District level in the school’s history. We are now aiming at defending both the National and East Africa school’s Championships this year.”

Stated Mugerwa whose side scored 72 goals and only concede 4 on their way to coronation.

Buddo’s Joseph Bukenya was named tournament’s Most Valuable Player whereas his teammate Ronald Innocent was the top scorer with 9 goals.

Wakiso District will be represented by Buddo, St. Mary’s Kitende, Standard High Zana winners of the third place playoff, St. Julian High School and Kawempe Royal College at this year’s showpiece in Jinja.
