“Best player in the league “. How too much self-belief and arrogance have deterred Ssemujju’s progress

Danito NSUBUGA

He was signed by Edward Golola towards the beginning of the 2014/15 season as one of the hottest prospects from the talent pool of St. Mary’s Kitende.

Joseph Ssemujju was billed higher than Farouk Miya, Keziron Kizito and many other kids that were on the rise at the time.

The 2015/16 season was supposed to serve as the podium for Ssemujju’s launch but the youngster failed to command a starting berth in the team and was consequently loaned out to Proline FC the following season.

Things still turned out tough for him with Proline struggling to stay up, they needed someone with a tougher attitude and mentality which lacked in Ssemujju’s game.

He was shipped back to Kitende and this term another loan deal to Express FC came calling, Douglas Bamweyana gave him a chance but he too got his fingers burnt.

Some good displays at the beginning were overshadowed by a series of unconvincing performances which were highlighted by a penalty missed in a do or die match against Mbarara City at Wankulukuku. Express managed to win the game thanks to a late David Ndihabwe goal but Ssemujju’s love affair with the Express FC hopefuls had been tainted.

“I must admit, I have been accused of being unserious on many occasions by many people in football. Though I try so hard to improve my game but at some point laziness cropped in when I needed to push harder”

Express FC managed to survive relegation on the final day of the 2017/18 season but weren’t willing to keep him for the following season after the expiry of his Vipers contract and he got released to join SC Villa who were rebuilding from scratch.

He spent 2 seasons on loan at Express FC

“The same story happened at Express FC, the coach had immense trust in my ability but luck wasn’t on my side. I failed to produce consistent performances yet we had to play every match like a cup final.”

At SC Villa, he quickly became a fan favourite after being trusted by Moses Basena to be the thinker of the team. His pace, trickery and ferocious shot won over many hearts at Villa park but Basena’s sacking 10 matches in the season spelt doom for Ssemujju too.

He failed to command a starting berth under Bamweyana and he found a new place on the bench.

THE SELF CONFIDENCE

Most athletes have idols to whom their game is modeled but for Ssemujju, the story is different

“I don’t look up to anyone, I am my own self and always aspire to be better than myself every day”

Pinned to name at least one player who challenges him, the winger was quick to chest thump.

” I am the best player in Uganda and very soon, I will prove that to everyone”

” I made mistakes in the past but I am now a changed and focused man. I believe I joined Vipers too soon when I was too young to compete but I am now grown up and time is still on my side”

After producing a few man of the match performances, he Hope’s to resurrect his career at BUL FC

He added.

Currently at BUL Fc in his second season, flashes of his brilliance were exhibited. He joined then in the January transfer window, made 7 appearances scoring 4 times, assisting twice and winning 2 man of the match accolades.

Along all that time, he has never achieved any national team call ups despite being a member of the underage teams.
