It’s just days to the start of the 2019 Uganda Para Badminton International Championships. The competition is slated for April 22st – 28th, 2019 at MTN Arena, Lugogo.
This is a competition where people with disabilities showcase their abilities in the game of Badminton and this will be the third edition of the event. The previous ones were held in 2017 and 2018.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Badminton Association Simon Mugabi confirmed to the press that Uganda is ready to host 26 countries and they expect a great competition
“We are delighted that we shall be hosting over 26 Nations across the World in the Uganda Para- Badminton competition this year. This is an event were people with disabilities showcase their potential in the game, it’s a great tournament and we are very ready for it.
I call upon fellow Ugandans to come and give support to our team like we usually do during various Badminton events.”
Para Olympics President Mpindi Bumali however pleaded to the government to give them support due to inadequate equipments
“We call upon the government to give us a hand since we have a challenge of inadequate equipments for example we only have ten wheel chairs. This is not enough we need more for the good of the competition.” Bumali stated
Uganda will be represented by 35 participants and over 200 will tussle it out in the following categories – wheel chair, standing with impairments in the lower limbs, standing with impairments in the upper limbs and short stature.
The 27 countries to take part are Uganda, Austria, Benin, Brazil, Burundi, Central Africa Republic, DR Congo, Egypt, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Norway, Peru, Poland, Russia, Scotland, South Africa, Turkey, UAE, USA and Zimbabwe
