Uganda’s Crested Cranes earned a 2-0 win over Ethiopia in the first leg of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations Qualifiers played at Kitende.

Riticia Nabbosa and U20 captain Fauzia Najjemba scored the two goals for Uganda.

George Lutalo named a star studded line up that had Hasifa Nassuna, Sandra Nabweteme, Najjemba and youngster Margaret Kunihira leading the attack.

Nabbosa put Uganda in the lead with a neat finish from a long ball by the match day debutant Summaya Komuntale in the second minute of the game.

Nabweteme had two attempts on goal in the first 20 minutes but he efforts were too feeble to upset the Ethiopian goalkeeper.

Ethiopia would have headed into the halftime break with probably a different scoreline but Ruth Aturo brilliantly denied them on four clear occasions.

In the 25th minute, Asia Nakibuuka blundered at the edge of the box but Aturo made amends to deny Loza Abera who was clear on goal.

Moments later, goal scorer Nabbosa went off limping and her place was taken by Shamira Nalugya.

Aturo then denied Senafu Wakuma Denise from close range following another howler from midfielder Joan Anita Nabirye in the 40th minute.

Two minutes later, Aturo was called into action with another brilliant save to parry away Medina Awol’s goal bound shot for a corner kick.

Loza Abera then went clear on goal again at the stroke of halftime but Aturo stood up to the occasion and saved once again.

The second half saw Juliet Nalukenge replace Nabweteme in the 50th minute. Sheebah Zalwango also replaced Nassuna moments later.

Against the run of play, Najjemba doubled Uganda’s lead with a superb header from a Sheebah Zalwango long ball in the 75th minute.

Nalukenge also had an opportunity to get on the score sheet in the 82nd minute but her strike from a Kunihira cross went above the goal frame.

Uganda will face Ethiopia in the second leg on Tuesday 26th in Bahir Dar.

The aggregate winner will face Kenya or South Sudan in the final round of qualification. The Harambee Starlets have also thumped South Sudan 8-0 in Nyayo.
