AIRTEL RISING STARS : Kawempe Muslim wins both Boys and Girls titles in Kampala Region

Kawempe Muslim clinched both the boys and girls championships of Kampala Region in the finals played at the Ssendi playground, Kabowa on Sunday.

The Airtel Rising Stars programme is eligible for players below the age of 17 years.

Kawempe Muslim edged last year’s winners KJT 6-5 on penalties after a goalless draw in the boys’ final of the 2019 Airtel Rising Stars Kampala Regional Qualifiers.

Earlier on Friday and Saturday, 14 other teams from Kampala Region had tussled out in the preliminary round and early knock out stage.

During the semifinal, Kawempe beat St.Mary’s 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw whereas KJT overcame Super Heroes 5-4 in a shootout following a barren stalemate.

In the girls’ category, Kawempe came from a goal down to beat 2018 champions Uganda Martyrs High School Rubaga 2-1 to win the event which was contested by eight teams in total.

Rebecca Nakato and Hadijah Nandago scored for Kawempe while Latifah Nakasi netted for Uganda Martyrs.

Kampala Woman MP, Nabilah Nagayi was the chief guest at the grand finale with FUFA 2nd Vice President Darius Mugoya, Edrisa Kasalirwe (chairman, Kampala Region), Deputy Youth Development officer Bashir Mutyaba all in attendance.

Airtel Uganda, the main sponsors of this annual youth event was represented by Noela Byuma the Brand and Strategy Manager.

With the Kampala Regional qualifiers done and dusted, focus turns to Buganda Region in Luweero starting Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th August.
