It was last day of the group stages of the Masaza Cup 2017 that saw Mawokota, Busiro and Kkooki progress to the quarter finals.

Group A saw Mawokota outclass 2008 champions Kyaddondo with 2-0 at Buwama in a decisive game to book a place in the knockout phase. Zziwa Vicent’s corner in the 20th minute found an unmarked Atwere Fred to score the first of the day for Mawokota with a bullet header.

Zziwa Vincent doubled the lead in the 76th minute from a direct corner kick to put the hosts into a comfortable 2-0 lead. Kyaddondo who had an improved second half couldn’t find a way passed a well defensively organized Mawokota side.

A very excited Mawokota head coach Edward Golola said,

“Am grateful that we have progressed to the next round especially when our fans had lost hope in the team. The great team work has paid off and the last eight here we come.”

In another Group A duel, Busiro also had a 2-0 win over Butambala at Sentema with goals coming from Kalule Richard in the 34th minute and Mayido Gerald who made it 2-0 from a penalty kick after Butambala defender a handled the ball in the forbidden area from a Waiswa Mathias effort 25 minutes to time.

Busiro coach Kiwanuka Paul shared his pleasure at reaching the quarterfinals  with us. He said,

“It was an important win and a very hard fought one,  we came into this final game well aware of what was at stake for us,   it was either a win or nothing else and thank God we got exactly what we wanted.

“I am very happy and proud of my team that we have reached  the quarterfinals,  You never know what happens next at this stage.” Added Kiwanuka.

Busiro qualify as Group A leaders on 13 points with a better goal difference than runners up Mawokota. Mawokota will face-off with Group B winners Buddu in the Quarter finals.
