DAVID GOMBE

The Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) has postponed the games of Uganda in the upcoming FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers in Monastir, Tunisia.

The development follows the outbreak of Covid-19 in the Silverbacks team. Five of the members of the Uganda delegation tested positive, despite having earlier tested negative.

Brian Tuka the Silverbacks media officer also confirmed the development

“It’s with great Sadness that announce that our games have been cancelled for this window because of Covid cases in our camp FIBA have made a decision in the last couple of minutes.”

“The management will be looking to get the available players back home and those still positive they will make arrangements to stay here safe until they test negative to be able to leave.” Stated Tuka

Silverbacks were supposed to play Egypt on Thursday, 18th February before facing Cape Verde on February 21st but the games won’t be taking place due the outbreak of Covid-19 in Uganda Camp.

FIBA is expected to decided on the new date and will also continue to monitor the Covid-19 situation.

The Afrobasket championship is due 24 August to 5 September 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda.
