AFCON U-20: Uganda Hippos face off with Ghana in historic final

Fresh from dismantling favourites Tunisia in the semi-final, the Uganda Hippos are out to tustle it out with Ghana’s Black Satellites in the final of the 2020 edition at Stade Olympique in Nouakchott- Mauritania.

The Ugandans whitewashed Tunisia 4-1 courtesy of a Richard Basangwa strike and a hat-trick from striker Derrick Kakooza.

Ghana beat Gambia 1-0 in the semi-final to book a date against the debutants in the final.

Kakooza leads the scorers’ charts with 5 goals⁰

The Ghanaians will be aiming to win their fourth title having previously won the 1993,1999 and 2009 editions. They have so far appeared in 12 times and played six in the finals in this tournament.

Ghana’s head-coach AbdulKarim Zito has sent a sound warning to his charges, reminding them that it is time to write their names in the history books of their country.

“My players have an opportunity to make a name for themselves. They have an opportunity to write their names in Ghana’s history books. That should be the driving force going into the final”, said Zito as reported by Ghanaian media

The Tournament final will be played today 6th, March, 2021, the day Ghanaians will be celebrating their country’s independence.

Uganda who are having their debut appearance have shown the zeal and resilence on the road to final. They have the Tournament’s topscorer in Derrick Kakooza with Five goals, two ahead of Ghana’s Percious Boah on Three goals. Another Ghanaian Issahaku Fatawu has two goals to his name.

The last time Uganda played against Ghana in a cup Final was in AFCON-1987 in Accra-Ghana where the East Africans lost West Africans. Therefore, a win for Uganda will be a sweet revenge against their opponents.
