Tanzania 2-0 Cape Verde
The Taifa Stars of Tanzania retaliated to the loss in Praia with a 2-0 win over Cape Verde Islands in Dar es Salam on Tuesday.
Prior to this match, Tanzania was 3rd on the group L, winless in as many matches and needed a moral boosting win to keep their hopes of qualification alive.
It was a match where Emmanuel Amunike’s coached men would have gone ahead in the 22nd minute when Simon Msuva won them a penalty but their skipper Mbwana Ally Samatta was denied by the woodwork.
6 minutes later, Samatta made amends when he emphatically drove past a host of Cape Verde defenders to tee up an unmarked Msuva who easily tapped home to spur the hosts in the lead.
Samatta doubled the scoreline with a thunderbolt strike after a nice interplay with Mudathir Yahya in the 57th minute.
The Belgium based striker will however be out of Tanzania’s next engagement in Lesotho in November due to accumulated yellow cards.
Tanzania now sit 2nd with 5 points garnered from 4 games and will have to beat Lesotho in Maseru and Uganda at home if at all they stand a chance to seal a qualification slot to the 2019 AFCON.
Noteworthy, the Taifa Stars have not been at the AFCON final tournament since 1980.
Tunisia, Cameroon, Egypt, Senegal and minnows Madagascar have already booked berths in the final tournament.
