The Black Stars failed to make it out of the group for the first time since 2006 as they lost 3-2 to minnows Comoros in the final group game.

Ghana came into the game with nothing to settle for but a win having failed to win in the opening two fixtures.

Comoros took a surprise early lead in the 4th minute of the game through skipper Ben El Fardou’s brilliant strike.

Ghana’s woes aggravated in the 25th minute when their captain Andre Dede Ayew was sent off for a harsh challenge on the Comoros goalkeeper Salim Ben Boina.

Ghana threw everything to Comoros but it was the Islanders who scored again.

Ahmed Mogni caught the Ghanaian defense flat footed to double the lead in the 61st minute with a clinical left footed shot.

Ghana pulled one back through substitute Richmond Boakye who headed home from a melee three minutes later.

Defender Alexander Djiku equalized for the Black Stars with a tap in off Thomas Partey’s ball in the 72nd minute.

Ghana kept pushing for a winning goal but they were stunned by Comoros’ third goal which came in the 85th minute through Ahmed Mogni’s tap in.

The win was Comoros’ first ever at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The other group game saw Morocco and Gabon draw 2-2 in Yaounde and subsequently qualified as the best placed two teams in the group with seven and five points respectively.

Gabon scored through Jim Allevinah and Nayef Aguerd’s own goal while Morocco scored through Sofiane Boufal’s penalty and Achraf Hakimi.

Gabon will face Burkina Faso in the first confirmed round of 16 tie.
