10-man Uganda Cranes settle for goal-less draw with Mali

Uganda Cranes have played to another goal-less draw in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers after holding Mali at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

The Cranes had to complete the match with a man less after defender Murushid Juuko was shown a red card in 65th minute for elbowing Ibrahima Kone.

There was nothing to write home about as Mali who seemed hungrier for victory dominated proceedings while Uganda opted to sit back.

The start of the game saw Uganda trying to match the Malians and had an attempt through Bobosi Byaruhanga whose goal bound free kick was parried away by the keeper for a corner kick.

Mali nearly broke the deadlock at the stroke of halftime through Moussa Doumbia but his shot from outside the box went a few inches above the goal frame.

Juuko saw his first yellow in the 30th minute for fouling Ibrahima Kone in a counter attack situation.

The Express FC defender was unfortunately sent for an early shower when he elbowed Kone near the corner flag 20 minutes into the second half.

Milutin Sredojevic Micho the Cranes coached subsequently brought on KCCA’s newly signed right back Innocent Wafula for captain Emmanuel Okwi while Mustafa Kizza was brought on toreplace Joseph Ochaya.

Wafula took up the right back slot while Dennis Iguma shifted to the central defense.

Mali’s starting XI

Derrick Nsibambi, Byaruhanga and Milton Karisa also paved way for Steven Mukwala, Moses Waiswa and Ibrahim Orit in the closing 10 minutes of the game.

Mali pushed for a winning game but couldn’t find a breakthrough thus settled for a point.

The Eagles now lead the Group E table with four points while Uganda and Kenya have garnered two points. Rwanda is bottom with one point.

Uganda will shift to the double header against neighbors Rwanda next month in the next International break window.
