Vipers leave it late against Paidha to reclaim the summit

GEOFFREY Wasswa’s late strike was the match winner as Vipers edged Paidha Black Angels 2-1 at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Vipers SC tactician Javier Martinez Espinoza named a side without skipper Taddeo Lwanga, Moses Waiswa who were part of the National team. First choice custodian Fabien Mutombora also missed out after sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with Burundi.

Tito Okello had numerous chances to fire the home side into the lead in the first period but his finishing was left wanting.

Geoffrey Wasswa also failed to score from about 8 yards with only 14 minutes to the halftime breather.

In the 58th minute, Vipers was awarded a penalty by referee Brian Miiro when Abraham Ndugwa got pulled pulled down in the box.

Tito Okello who had missed several scoring chances in the first period didn’t disappoint this time as he comfortably converted from 12 yards for his third goal of the season.

Two minutes later, Paidha Black Angels captain Crowmell Rwothomio levelled matters with an exquisite volley to send the traveling fans into a bouncing frenzy.

With only six minutes to normal time, Dan Sserunkuma nearly won it for Vipers from a Duncan Seninde brilliant donkey work but his effort went wide.

In added time, Paidha Black Angels defence went asleep as the named Vipers captain of the day Geoffrey Wasswa inspired the champions to maximum points.

Victory not only ended Vipers’ three match winless run but also saw them climb to the summit of the table with 18 points while Paidha Black Angels is bottom placed after defeat with 4 points.

Martinez Espinoza introduced on Noah Wafula for Brian Kalumba, Brian Nkuubi for Abraham Ndugwa and Dan Sserunkuma for Joseph Janjali.

The visitors made the following changes, Patrick Arua for Nsubuga Jackson, Julius Malingumu for Kidega Andrew and Floribert Pithua for Charlie Adam.

Charlie Adam was the only player to be booked in the game. Geoffrey Wasswa was named the Pilsner man of the match.

Vipers SC will next travel to Khartoum to face El Merrickh in the first leg of the CAF Champions league preliminary round. Espinoza’s charges are likely to travel on Tuesday 27th, November.

Paidha Black Angels next play Bright stars FC on 1st December.
