Swift Sports sources reveal that Vipers SC are chasing after the signature of Zambia based goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya.
Vipers are currently in search of a goalkeeper before the start of the new season and hope to sign Kigonya who is currently in the country on an off-season holiday.
Kigonya was arguably one of the best players in the concluded Zambian league after keeping 14 clean sheets in the 26 games he played for Forest Rangers who lost the title race to the eventual champions Nkana FC on the closing day of the season.
Vipers’ coach Fred Kajoba previously worked with Kigonya at Bright Stars and the national team The Cranes and hopes to bolster his goalkeeping department with the acquisition of Kigonya.
Vipers currently have Fabien Mutombora as their first choice while his available understudy Bashir Sekagya has also been linked with another loan move away from Kitende.
The club lost Derrick Ochan who joined Police FC and hoped to sign Kyetume’s Joel Mutakubwa and free agent Nicholas Sebwato but neither of the deals could materialize.
The Venoms will represent Uganda in the 2020/21 CAF Champions League with hopes of defending their Uganda Premier League title as well.
Kigonya previously featured for Soana FC (now known as Tooro United) before he joined Bright Stars and later Sofapaka in Kenya.
He had a brief stint at Kakamega Homeboyz from where he switched to Forest Rangers in Zambia at the start of 2019.
He has three caps with the Cranes and represented Uganda in the 2015 CECAFA Championship and 2016 CHAN tournament in Ethiopia and Rwanda respectively.
Highlanders FC of Zimbabwe, Zambia’s Power Dynamos and ZESCO United are other sides that have previously expressed interest in signing Kigonya while his club Forest Rangers wish to retain him.
