Last week, the International Olympic Committee and Japanese organisers agreed to postpone the Olympic games until 2021 due to the deadly global COVID-19 pandemic.

The Olympic games were scheduled to begin on July 24th to August 9th this year but will now start on July 23rd and run to 8th August 2021.

The Paralympic Games, originally due to start on 25th August, 2020 will now take place between 24th August and 5th September.

A decision was made on Monday during the Executive board meeting after the games were moved from this summer.

The games will still be called Tokyo 2020 despite taking place in 2021.

For starters, this was the first ever postponement in the 124 year history of the competition. The Olympics have previously only been cancelled completely during periods if World War in 1916, 1940 and 1944 but never suspended during peacetime.
