Ugandan striker Umaru Kasumba was today morning voted  as the top scorer and one of the best players at Kenyan Premier League side Sofapaka.

The runner-up for the best player is Hillary Echesa while the whole team won the Fair Play Award.

During the brief awards ceremony held at the team’s training ground at Eastleigh High School, Kasumba tied with fellow Ugandan Rodgers Aloro in the best player category and the two players shared Sh 30,000 for the honours.

Separately, Kasumba got a similar amount for being the highest scorer with six goals in five matches.

On the other hand, Captain Echesa who is away on compassionate leave was honored in absentia  as the second best player and was awarded Sh 20,000.

“I thank my teammates for the reason that I would not have been adjudged one of the best players without their support. The award was stemmed on teamwork and I must thank my colleagues for their unswerving support,” said Aloro.

Speaking during the ceremony, Kasumba said he was delighted with the awards and promised to continue working hard with his eyes firmly set on the Golden Boot Award (GBA) so he can become the second Ugandan player after Dan Sserunkuma to achieve the feat.

Sserunkuma entered his name in the annals of the top tier Kenyan league in 2014 when he plundered 16 goals, the highest, during his stint at Gor Mahia who went ahead to clinch the league title.

In the meantime, Kasumba who has six goals, five shy of the ones scored by top KPL scorer Stephen Waruru of Ulinzi Stars, has expressed optimism of being declared the top marksman at the end of the KPL season.

“I will work hard and hopefully surpass the number of goals scored by Waruru. I must thank my teammates for the award I got at Sofapaka since were it not for them, I would not have scored. It all boils down to team work and I must also thank God for this great honour,” said Kasumba.

Sofapaka coach Sam Ssimbwa hailed the recipients of the awards and urged other players to work hard and emulate them.

“The players who received the award have worked hard. Indeed all the others should give their all if we are to successfully challenge for the title which we last won in 2009,” said Ssimbwa.
