ATHLETICS : Ugandan quartet departs for Diamond League

The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni flagged off athletes Joshua Cheptegei, Halima Nakaayi, Winnie Nanyondo and Kissa Stephan who will compete in the Diamond League on 14th August, 2020 in Monaco.

The ceremony was held at State House, Nakasero and was attended by the Minister of State for Sports Hon. Hamson Denis Obua, President Uganda Olympic Committee William Blick, Commissioner Physical Education Ministry of Education and Sports Mr. Omara Apiita and National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel.

“I thank you for the excellent performances which were globally recognized as manifested by the number of medals being won by athletes.”

I urge everyone to be disciplined, act with integrity at all the times and avoid temptation to use prohibited substances, I wish you well and may you excel and make Uganda proud.”

Kataha told the athletes.

The quartet departed the country on Saturday aboard a chartered flight by Uganda Airlines.

Last year, Cheptegei raced to a historic IAAF Diamond League 5000m triumph in the Swiss City of Zurich and will again be aiming at excelling in the same event.

Earlier this year, He claimed the 5Km in Monaco with a world record 12:51 and is also the 10,000m World Champion.

Nakaayi will be aiming at another remarkable success in the 800m to add to her astonishing performance in Doha last year, where he scooped the 800m gold medal.

Stephan will also hunting for a medal in the 5000m while Winnie will be looking to succeed in the 1500m
