AFCON U17: Cubs bounce back with convincing win over Tanzania

The Uganda Cubs overcame the Serengeti Boys of Tanzania with a convincing 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Andrew Kawooya, Ivan Asaba “Di Maria” and Yiga Najib.

The Cubs had lost 1-0 to Angola on Sunday in their opening match of the AFCON tournament.

Kawooya put Fabin Kwesi’s charges in the lead from a Yiga Najib ball 15 minutes into the game.

Asaba alias “Di Maria” made it 2-0 a minute to the half hour mark firing home a Rogers Mugisha wonderful spadework.

Yiga Najib put the icing on the cake with a superb header in the 76th minute to ensure a comprehensive victory.

Cubs goalkeeper Jack Komakech was also equal to the challenge to ensure Uganda walks away with a clean sheet on the evening.

Asaba Di Maria, subbed in the closing stages for John Alou, was named man of the match.

Ismail Mugulusi and Iddi Abdul Wahid also came on for goal scorer Kawooya and Rogers Mugisha respectively.

The result puts Uganda on three points, level with Angola while Nigeria tops the group and already booked a berth in the semi finals.

The semi finalists of the tournament automatically qualify for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in Brazil.

Uganda will play against Nigeria in the third and final group game with hopes that Angola don’t win against Tanzania.
