The Uganda Cubs lost their opening Group A match 1-0 to Angola as the AFCON U-17 tournament kicked off on Sunday at the National Stadium in Tanzania.

Osvaldo Pedro Capemba scored the lone goal in the 33rd minute that later turned out to be the difference at full-time.

The Cubs had attempts from Najib Yiga, Ibrahim Juma, Andrew Kawooya, Iddi Abdul Wahid and substitute Ismail Mugulusi but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Jack Komakech the Cubs goalkeeper was steady between the sticks to deny the Angolans.

Thomas Kakaire, Ismail Mugulusi and Mukisa Opalla were brought on Andrew Kawooya, Ivan Asaba and Davis Ssekajja respectively in pursuit for a leveller.

Mugulusi had the best chance to level matters but his effort came off the lower post before it was cleared away from the goal mouth.

Left back Ibrahim Juma was shown marching orders three minutes to normal time.

Fabin Paa Kwesi, the Cubs head coach attributed defeat to a lapse in defense that led to the Angola goal.

” We all put our plans into play. They had one chance and used it, we had several and we were beaten. So that was the difference. The goal we conceded – when they had the corner kick, we switched off. I was a little bit disappointed but we came back strongly and defended well.”

” We are going on the drawing board to correct the mistakes we made and approach our next game. We are down but not yet out.”

Uganda’s next match will be against the hosts and East African neighbors Tanzania on Wednesday.

Tanzania lost 5-4 to Nigeria in the official opening game of the tournament.
